‘숲처럼 보이지만 전체가 하나다’ 레이첼 서스만의 ‘나무의 말’에서 ‘PANDO’를 표현하는 문장이다. 라틴어로 ‘나는 퍼져 나간다’ 라는 뜻을 가진 ‘PANDO’는 북미에 서식하는 사시나무 군락의 이름이기도 하다. 이 군락은 4만 7천 그루의 나무로 이루어져 있는데 실제로는 하나의 뿌리를 두고 무성 번식을 하는 단일 생명체이다. 세상에서 가장 큰 생명체로 불리기도 하는 이 경이로운 존재는 나무라는 형태적 사고를 넘어 이후 공간과 환경을 연결하는 ‘영역’에 관한 이야기를 풀어나가는 실마리가 되었다.
“Though it appears to be a forest, the whole is one” - this line from Rachel Sussman’s “The Language of Trees” captures the essence of PANDO. Derived from the Latin meaning “I spread,” PANDO is also the name of a remarkable aspen grove in North America. While consisting of 47,000 trees, this grove is a single living organism that propagates vegetatively from one root system. Known as one of the largest living organisms on Earth, this extraordinary entity became the catalyst for exploring the concept of ‘territory’ - the interconnection between space and environment - beyond conventional notions of arboreal form.

처음엔 이런 단어들이 떠올랐던 것 같다. 정돈된 도시, 호수공원 주는 환기, 공원과 연결된 수평적 형태의 건물, 아직은 한산한 상가 분위기 등 익숙하지만 여유 있는 분위기의 첫인상을 그리고 있었다. 그렇게 사이트에 도착해 내부로 들어가는 순간 파노라마처럼 펼쳐진 아름다운 호수의 풍경은 쇼팽의 ‘겨울바람’의 극적인 대비에서 느꼈던 벅찬 감정처럼 다가왔고 잠시동안 무의식적이고 편견 없는 기쁨의 감정을 느꼈다. 그때 나는 다른 사람이 된 것처럼 순수하게 공간을 바라보게 되었다. “이곳은 이제 사람들에게 ‘호숫가에 자리한 아름다운 풍경을 담고 있는 도심 속 작은 안식처’가 될 거야.” 이렇게 치환된 생각은 아름다움을 바라보는 ‘관점’과 공간과 환경의 ‘영역’에 대해 다시 생각하게 해주었다.
My first impressions evoked familiar yet leisurely imagery: a well-ordered city, the refreshing presence of a lake park, a horizontal building integrated with the park, and the still-quiet atmosphere of the commercial area. Upon entering the site, the panoramic view of the beautiful lake unfolded before me, stirring emotions as dramatic as Chopin’s “Winter Wind” - a moment of pure, unprejudiced joy that transformed my perspective entirely. I found myself viewing the space with newfound clarity, thinking, “This will become an urban sanctuary, a lakeside haven offering beautiful views.” This realization prompted me to reconsider my ‘perspective’ on beauty and the ‘territory’ between space and the environment.

그렇게 공간의 연결과 확장, 심리적 영역 등 머릿속의 수수께끼 같은 단어들이 떠다닐 때 문득 책에서 읽었던 ‘PANDO’라는 생명체가 머릿속을 스쳐갔다. 도입부에 설명했던 이 경이로운 생명체는 이야기의 도화선이 되어 나에게 이런 상상을 심어 주었다. 공간은 호수와 물리적으로 떨어져 있는 것처럼 보이지만 같은 뿌리를 둔 하나의 유기체처럼 연결되어 있다. 호수와 건물, 건물과 공간, 공간에서의 호수, 호수에서의 공간은 주체가 되는 자의 동선과 시점에 따라 다양하게 변화한다. 호수를 품고 있는 건물은 마치 호수를 수호하는 존재로 느껴 지기도 하고 밤에 호수에서 바라본 공간은 마치 인과적으로 연결될 수 없을 만큼 아득히 먼 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 내부에서 풍경은 시점이 주는 착시로 호수를 바로 앞까지 끌어당겨 공간과 연결된 것처럼 느껴 지기도 하며 그 순간 내부의 원기둥과 천장 오브제는 마치 공간과 호수를 품는 한 그루의 나무처럼 보이기도 한다.
As these enigmatic concepts of spatial connection, expansion, and psychological territory swirled in my mind, I recalled ‘PANDO’ from my reading. This extraordinary organism, mentioned in the introduction, sparked my imagination: though the space appears physically separate from the lake, they are connected like a single organism sharing the same roots. The relationships between lake and building, building and space, space from the lake, and lake from space shift dynamically with the viewer’s movement and perspective. The building seems to embrace the lake as its guardian, while at night, viewed from the lake, it appears mysteriously distant, as if defying causality. Inside, the perspective creates an illusion that draws the lake closer, making it feel connected to the space, while the interior columns and ceiling elements evoke the image of a single tree embracing both the space and the lake.

이러한 이야기는 공간에 스며들어 경험하는 이의 유도된 동선과 변화하는 시점을 통해 심리적 서사가 이루어지게 된다. 브라운 톤의 입구는 주변 환경과 분리되어 내부로 시선을 집중시켜 주는 역할을 하고 공간을 진입하는 정적인 순간, 사용자는 멀리 보이는 풍경을 목격하게 된다. 좌우의 기둥과 긴 카운터는 시점을 조여 무의식적인 흐름을 유도한다. 조여진 시점이 풀어지는 지점에서 공간은 천장고의 차이로 극적으로 확장되고 그곳에 위치한 수직적인 원기둥은 공간의 구심이 된다. 기둥의 중심부에서 퍼져 나간 패브릭 소재의 오브제는 마치 호수에 닿을 듯 공간의 심리적 영역을 확장시키고 좌석에 앉게 되면 내부를 품는 듯 다시 자연스럽게 조화된다. 뷰의 이점을 가질 수 없는 출입구 쪽 좌석은 소재와 톤을 달리하여 프라이빗 한 분위기를 연출해 공간의 심리적인 밀도를 맞추려고 하였다. 조명은 각각의 영역마다 조도 조절이 가능하게 하여 낮에는 브런치 레스토랑, 밤에는 비스트로로 운영되는 공간의 특징을 반영해 분위기를 다양하게 연출할 수 있도록 하였다. 가구와 펜던트 조명은 공간의 스케일에 맞춰 커스텀으로 제작되었다. 모든 요소는 흐름을 방해하지 않는 질서 있으면서도 부드러운 선을 가지고 있고 공간에 들어간 소재들은 최대한 선을 배제하여 공간감을 해치지 않으려고 노력하였다.
These narratives materialize into psychological storytelling through the guided circulation patterns and shifting perspectives of those who experience the space. The brown-toned entrance, distinct from its surroundings, draws focus inward, and as visitors enter this contemplative threshold, they encounter distant views unfolding before them. The columns on either side and the extended counter subtly compress the viewpoint, creating an unconscious flow through the space. At the point where this compression is released, the space dramatically expands through varying ceiling heights, with a vertical column serving as the spatial anchor. Fabric elements radiating from the column’s center appear to reach toward the lake, extending the psychological boundaries of the space while harmoniously embracing the interior when viewed from the seating areas. For seats near the entrance that lack the lake view, we created an intimate atmosphere through distinct materials and tones, maintaining the space’s psychological density. The lighting system allows for adjustable illumination in each zone, accommodating the venue’s dual identity as a daytime brunch restaurant and evening bistro. The furniture and pendant lights were custom-designed to match the spatial scale. Every element features ordered yet fluid lines that maintain flow, and we carefully minimized linear elements in the materials to preserve the sense of space.

‘아름다움’이란 감정이 발현되는 지점은 어디부터일까? 나는 그것을 ‘감동을 받았는가’ 라고 생각한다. 돌이켜보면 처음 나는 인간이 구획하고 만든 호수의 풍경을 보며 무의식적으로 편견 없는 감동을 받았다. 인위적으로 만든 공간일지라도 디자이너가 공간에 어떤 가치를 부여하는가, 어떤 고민을 하는가에 따라 공간을 찾는 이들에게 완전히 다른 경험을 제공할 수 있다. 이 공간에 담긴 고민과 이야기처럼 이 곳을 누리어 가질 많은 이들에게 아름다움의 물결이 천천히 그리고 멀리 퍼져 나가길 기대해본다.
Where does the sensation of ‘beauty’ begin? It starts with being moved emotionally. Looking back, I was unconsciously and unreservedly moved by the view of this human-made lake. Even in artificially created spaces, the values and considerations a designer brings to the space can offer visitors completely different experiences. Like the thoughtful contemplation and stories embedded in this space, I hope these waves of beauty will gradually ripple outward to touch all who come to inhabit these moments.
